Manakau and Ōhau sit north of Ōtaki on the Horowhenua side, strung along State Highway 1 and the older roads that run either side of it, taking in Kuku and the farms and orchards between them. It is working country rather than lifestyle country, and that changes what people need from us.
The first thing is simply distance. There is no computer help in Manakau or Ōhau. Levin is one way, Ōtaki the other, and neither is a quick errand when you are in the middle of something. That makes a technician who will actually drive out worth considerably more than one who is nominally closer but expects you to come to them. It also makes remote support genuinely useful here in a way it is not in town, because a fifteen-minute session can resolve a problem that would otherwise cost you half a day.
The second is that a farm office is a business, and it is holding records that cannot be recreated. Accounts and GST, payroll, stock numbers, spray diaries and animal health records tend to accumulate on one computer over many years, very often without any backup worth the name. When that drive fails, and eventually one does, the loss is not a nuisance, it is a compliance problem and a financial one. Setting up a backup that runs by itself, keeps a copy somewhere other than the machine, and gets checked occasionally is the least glamorous work we do and easily the most valuable.
The third is connectivity. Fibre is uncommon on these roads, so most properties are on rural fixed wireless or Starlink. The terminal usually has to go wherever the view is, which is rarely where the office is, so a large part of the job is bridging that gap properly instead of hoping the signal makes it.

We check all three before anyone suggests you change provider, because changing provider often does not help.
